Marci Suelzer Announces Bid for State Representative

Island Lake, June 12, 2020 – Today, Marci Suelzer officially announced her candidacy for State Representative in District 52. Suelzer, a business executive and licensed psychotherapist, said that she was running for the Illinois legislature because our state is facing unprecedented challenges and this district needs to be represented by someone who wants to make life better for all its citizens.

“Our area deserves a strong voice in Springfield to bring the change that we need,” Suelzer said. “As an executive and attorney with decades of experience working with tax law, I am well equipped to understand the complexities of the economic issues that face Illinois. And my training and work in mental health has given me the ability to listen carefully and move people toward solutions.”

Issues that Suelzer will concentrate on in Springfield include:

Ensuring accessible and affordable mental health care.  We must address the needs of those with mental illness and their families, suicide prevention, and provide care for anyone who needs it.

Revitalizing small businesses throughout the district reeling from the COVID-19 stay-at-home period.  We need them to come back stronger than ever.

Improving our Illinois economy by exploring alternatives to ever-increasing property taxes, and reducing impact of the current income tax system on citizens and businesses.

Suelzer works as a senior manager for a major legal services provider and has more than three decades of experience in leading teams and developing innovative solutions to problems. “My proven track record in the business arena of bringing different groups together to solve complicated problems, will help me serve the people of the district to the best of my ability.”

As a licensed professional mental health counselor, Suelzer has worked in community mental health, providing services to a wide variety of individuals whose struggle with mental illness is often intensified by the inability to get access to quality care in a timely manner. Currently, she is an adjunct professor at a local university where she teaches graduate-level classes in crisis and trauma counseling.

Suelzer has three grown children and has lived in Island Lake for 33 years with her husband, Ray, and her two cats, Molly and Wombat.

Suelzer’s opponent is current Barrington Hills village president Martin McLaughlin, owner of a private investment firm.  He strongly opposes expanded access to health care through the Affordable Care Act, is against sensible gun violence prevention laws, supports policies that make it harder for people to vote and is strongly in favor of taxpayer funding of private schools.  (Source: )

The 52nd State Representative District covers all or parts of Island Lake, Inverness, McHenry, Barrington, South Barrington, North Barrington, Hoffman Estates, Barrington Hills, Lake Barrington, Port Barrington, Fox River Grove, Cary, Crystal Lake, Algonquin, Dundee and Carpentersville.  The district is now wholly represented by three Democrats in Congress: Sean Casten, Raja Krishnamoorthi and Lauren Underwood.
